Pedro Martinez reeled off a total of 15 strikeouts as the Virginia Patriots
topped the Annadale Anteaters by a score of 5 to 3 at Shea
Stadium.

Martinez(1-0) earned his pay with a solid performance for Martinez.  He
allowed 9 hits and 4 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.  Annadale had a chance in
the 9th but they came up short.  

Todd Jones gained credit for his 1st save.  Damaso Marte(0-1) was hit with the
loss in relief.  Annadale's manager was impressed with Martinez and his 15
strikeouts.  'It's tough to generate runs if you can't make contact with the
ball.'
